EEAB - ECOLE D'ETÉ D'ARCHITECTURE DE BELGIQUE 2023

—DAY IV & V ~ Drawing with Colum, Peter & Mieke—

The Irish traditional architect Colum Mulhern, a good friend of the Round Table, came to give his contribution and enrich the Bruges Experience!
The day after, more reinforcements from the Netherlands join the party, with the sardonic expertise of Peter Drijver and the infinite energy of Mieke Bosse.

For our usual drawing session of the houses along the quay of Sint-Annarei in Bruges we received the precious help of Colum Mulhern —an Irish architect operating in Luxembourg— assisted by Riccardo Buratti, an Italian architect operating in East Flanders. The goal for the students was to get a more serious study of proportions and drawing en plein air.

At first, Colum used the "base" of the Association in the Sint-Annarei as an example to show traditional building methods.
The enthusiasm is great, the day nicely warm and, as you can see from the following picture gallery, the results are also very encouraging!

In the afternoon, the group had some time for measured drawings of the numerous buildings' details.

But it's not yet over! Other architects from the Netherlands join us for the exploration of the city. The dynamic architectural duo of Mieke Bosse and Peter Drijver has a lot to say! What is going on? Simple: casually walking through the city, occasionally stopping to sketch together an interesting place, then a moment of comment and feedback follows. The goal is to learn to perceive the urban structure and its features.

Thanks to our new toy, a nice drone for aerial captures, we can enjoy the impressive cityscape of Bruges and admire the class at work!

We even found the time to climb the belfry of the Gruuthuse but the strong wind and that wire mesh unfortunately prevent us from (unauthorizedlyangel) fly the drone.

Two very intense discovery days, days of friendship!

It is so, through exploration and discovery, that we keep learning the secrets of Traditional Architecture, keeping it alive and passing over the love for beauty and our identity as Europeans to the adults and professionals of the future.
