EEAB - ECOLE D'ETÉ D'ARCHITECTURE DE BELGIQUE 2023

—WEEKEND I—

Or how to turn failures into victories!

So Nadia organized it so nicely, checking on all the timetables of the bus that should have carried the students to Damme.
From the bus stop at the station of Bruges it would have been just 50 minutes.

But something went wrong! A bus broke down along the way and the circulation was so much hindered that it would have taken hours to reach Damme by bus. Literally nobody of the students showed up.

This turns then into the Tutors' Weekend!

After the night in Bellem, I woke up and met with Matheus, a visiting architect friend from the previous edition.
We expected activity among the students but there was only Mariia in the hall working on her drawings! It took the time of a breakfast to realize nobody was going to wake up on time or join us!! We then packed up our things and took the car to Damme, while some students were carrying on with their building details assignment.

Damme was the old haven of Bruges and the Spaniards transformed it in a military post later on, once it lost its port function.
Nature reclaimed the fortifications, leaving us a landscape rich in canals and groves.
In such a small town, just a few Kms from Bruges, it's possible to find unusually magnificent buildings like the town hall (C.XV) and the church of St.Catherine. The latter was partially destroyed by the Dutch protestants in 1572, and it remained so until today.
We met with Nadia, Noé and Pablo Alvarez Funez from Classical Planning .Org and started the visit with a nice meal at a Thai (!) restaurant, then proceeded to the town hall. After that we had an absolutely necessary need of delicious wafels and macarons at a local tea room, then a quick raid in a bookshop, and finally we visited the church of St. Catherine.

There, we flew the drone and grabbed great shots!

Here are those great shots I was saying, behold!

But...hey, don't we forget someone? Of course, the students! Where have we left them? ...aaah yes, the exercise on building details!
Let's see what they've done in our absence...

...an impressive work!
