EEAB - ECOLE D'ETÉ D'ARCHITECTURE DE BELGIQUE 2023

—DAY XVIII-XIX ~ José Baganha—

[ Index ]

During Thursday and Friday came José Baganha, a talented Portuguese architect who also won the prestigious Rafael Manzano Prize in 2017.

This time I won't annoy you with this and that account, I just introduce you José Baganha (because you don't know him, I'm sure you don't!) a Portuguese architect that very generously decided to come to us and give some lecture while his traditional school of Barcelona was going on.

Where does this project come from? What are the underlying concepts that can generate such project and represent it in such way?

Here you can find a video of a conference of him in Madrid that can help you understanding the genesis and the poetics behind such project:

Now, let's check carefully these examples of historical maps and actual works of José and his summer school of Barcelona. This kind of graphic style gives a lot of interesting hints about representation, and when one is studying the old urban plans to learn about architecture and urbanism, you inevitably end up looking at them also in a graphic way. And, of course, the other way around!
The contribution of José was in fact focused on urban planning and representation. Based on the analysis of historical urban plans we try to extract information and principles out of them, representing them through traditional graphics, like the one depicted in the following specimen:

Please note the rendering of urban blocks, public buildings and chromatic contrast of public space. The changes in ground elevation and coastline are also remarkable.

A nice close-up from a map he brought:

These observations regarding urban planning and quality of the built environment get applied on new projects at the Summer School of Barcelona with wonderful results. We should emulate this way of designing.

A moment during his lecture at the Seat of the Round Table (i.e. Nadia and Noé's house).

The days with José were very fruitful and we look forward to further collaborate with him and be influenced by his sensitive Lusitanian approach to the Discipline.

But now, once again, is de taim ov lanch!

...with an incredible multicultural meal in which every nationality would prepare some typical food to share with others. That's the diversity we like.
We also welcome Stefania, an Italian journalist that joined us in time for the gothic project. She will write an article on the Summer School and what she will learn about traditional architecture.
So, smakelijk iedereen, and see you soon!
