EEAB - ECOLE D'ETÉ D'ARCHITECTURE DE BELGIQUE 2023

—DAY XXIII - Final Week—

[ Index ]

A week for receiving jury members, architects, craftsmen, shareholders... and prepare for the final show! In the meantime the students work hard to finish their projects on time.

After the amazing experience with José and the conference with David, we welcome two new Italian students who participate in the last week's project, which is to design the main facade of a building of an assigned typology following an own floor plan.
We are going to talk about this in the proper explanation of the final day, but in the meantime we are happy to make friendship with Jacopo, a joung architect living in Brussels and willing to explore the potential of traditional design - and Stefania, an experienced journalist that is broadening her knowledge of architecture for her work.

On the same day the notorious British architect Mark Wilson Jones (the boss of Jakub Ryng, and owner of Apollodorus Architects) reached us with other 2 younger generations of his so-said Italo-British family, but we also get acquainted with a special guy from USA that -I'm sure- will stay with us for quite a while...this guy is a plasterer, a craftsman of extablished fame, a drawer and a thinker. His name is Patrick Webb, and we are going to know deepen his knowled in the next weeks of workshops. For now, you can see him on the right in the picture underneath with Mark Wilson Jones, on the left, and... aaaaand.... Léon Krier!
Léon finally joined us along with his wife, after last year's missed opportunity. Of course I didn't lose time and got all my books from Léon signed.

Léon Krier is a very important architect in our "traditional bubble" because he managed to establish a theoretical framework (and communicate it really well) with which actually build complex traditional projects, from buildings to urban designs.
Besides being a very brilliant and humourous guy, he shows that it is possible to design and build entire human environments *that work* basing on traditional principles. It is so that Léon and his wife, together with Mark and I, visit the neighbourhood of Heulebrug in Knokke-Heist (
51°19'48.7"N 3°14'32.8"E).
This neighbourhood was a design that Léon initiated and then left at a certain stage halfway. The buildings here have not been overseen by him, and he was kind of curious to see how the project got completed. Here are some pictures:

In the evening, Robert Adam and his wife shew up in Bruges, for a dinner at Nadia and Noé's house, together with the jury members. In this picture we can see Mark, holding his baby nephew, casually talking with Robert. On the background, Léon chatting with Anne-Katherine Mulhern, the daughter of Colum.

Here you can see Noé and Jakub enjoying their aperitivo, together with William Pesson:

The attention to detail of the guys:

...and a giant dinner follows; in the meanwhile the students sweat on their assignments (for the glory!).
In this picture: Jakub Ryng, William Pesson, Patrick Webb, Robert Adam, Riccardo Buratti, Nadia Everard, Melissa Van Doorselaer, Hugh Kavanagh, Anne-Katherine Muhlern, Léon Krier, Noé Morin.
If you know some names...there's much weight at this table. Cultural weight I mean!

See you on the last day, for the presentation of the work of the Four Weeks! The Orangerie is ready...
